Alireza Firouzja Breaks 2800, Becomes World No 2

Grandmaster(GM) Alireza Firouzja just became the new world #2 after crossing the legendary 2800 rating barrier.

The 18-year old Grandmaster just finished with a superb 8/9 at the European Team Championship adding a massive 22+ rating points.

A final win over the strong GM Mamedyarov Shakhriyar did the trick resulting in a 3015 performance rating!

He is currently the youngest to ever cross the 2800 barrier at the age of 18 years and 5 months, breaking the record of the World Champion and World #1, Magnus Carlsen of 18 years and 11 months.

Firouzja will be rated 2804 on the December FIDE rating list. A quick look at the live ratings shows this:

The International Chess Federation took to celebrating the young chap on his notable and record-breaking achievement;

    • Contending with Magnus Carlsen soon for the world championship?? Oh you mean it’s a foregone conclusion Magnus is retaining his title?

      • That statement just simply meant that Firouzja will likely be the next world championship challenger and he’s capable of defeating Carlsen in their match.
