Anatoly Karpov is a Russian chess Grandmaster and former World Chess Champion. Born in 1951 in Zlatoust, Russia, Karpov began playing chess at the age of four and was awarded the title of International Master at the age of fifteen.

Karpov achieved remarkable success in the Soviet Junior Championship in 1969 and went on to become the World Chess Champion in 1975.

Karpov has an impressive record of tournament victories, having won more than 160 international tournaments.

His impressive achievements have earned him the title of one of the greatest players of all time. Karpov is the only player in history to have held the world championship title for more than 10 years.

Early Life

Anatoly Karpov was born on May 23rd 1951 in Zlatoust, Russia.

As a child, Karpov showed a deep interest in chess and started playing at the age of 4. His first chess lesson came from his father, who was also a professional chess player.

Karpov’s talent and ambition were clear at a young age, and he excelled in chess competitions.

In 1965, he won the prestigious Russian Junior Chess Championship, and by the age of 12 he was already competing in adult tournaments. This early success was only a prelude to a significant career.

Karpov won the World Junior Chess Championship in 1969 at the age of 18 and attended the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture and Sport from 1969 to 1972.

During this time, he rose to the top of the chess world and solidified his reputation as one of the greatest chess players of all time.

World Champion

Karpov’s fame was solidified when he won the 1975 World Chess Championship after his opponent, reigning champion Bobby Fischer, forfeited the match.

During his reign as World Champion, Karpov successfully defended his title in 1798 and 1981 against Viktor Korchnoi until he lost it in 1984 against Garry Kasparov.

He also won several world championship tournaments and other major tournaments such as Linares, Las Palmas, and Tilburg.

Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov are two of the greatest chess players of all time, and their rivalry throughout the 1980s spawned one of the greatest rivalries in chess history.

Their rivalry, known as the “Karpov-Kasparov Wars”, was highly anticipated and millions of people followed the five matches for the World Chess Championship.

The contrast between their styles was striking, with Kasparov’s aggressive style contrasting sharply with Karpov’s more defensive approach.

The intensity of the rivalry between the two players was credited with popularizing chess around the world.
